Almost perfect, good enough to replace Skitch
I came from Skitch after realizing that I was wasting $5/mo on Evernote for services that other apps could do as well if not better.
Unfortunately, one part of losing Evernote also meant losing Skitch (I regularly take screenshots, so I quickly surpass the free 60mb monthly upload limit), so I sought out a replacement. That said, my gripes with Annotate almost strictly relate to how I used Skitch and its featuers.
They include:
- automatically saving a screenshot when it’s taken - Annotate offers that but you must integrate with a third-party cloud service. It doesn’t appear to offer automatic saving to local storag
- text doesn’t automatically begin appearing on image when you begin typing
- the window doesn’t vanish when trying to drag the image somewhere else, a la Napkin or Skitch
- no Callout/zoom feature (still using Napkin and/or Preview for this)
There are definite pros to this though:
- the GIF maker is very handy, though there’s a bug it appears where if you try to drag the GIF somewhere, it gets hung up on saving. You have to save it first, then you can drag it somewhere (if you desire, though at this point it’s largely not necessary)
- not limited based on some space limitation a la Evernote’s monthly upload limits, where once you reach the limit you can no longer use the app
- the pixelation and dimming features are nice. I’ve only used the dimming feature, but it’s been handy more than once
Overall, if you’re looking for a Skitch replacement, this liikely suffices as long as you don’t heavily lean on the feature differences listed above.
